- SuperMac Announces the Sale of its ReelTime™ Software to Adobe Systems
-
- Agreement forms strategic alliance in emerging digital video market
-
- SUNNYVALE, CALIF. -- August 28, 1991 -- SuperMac Technology™ today announced
- the sale of its ReelTime™ digital video editing software to Adobe Systems, Inc.
- Specific terms of the transaction were not disclosed. Under the terms of the
- agreement, SuperMac and Adobe will continue to co-develop the product.
- SuperMac will bundle ReelTime free with its VideoSpigot™ and VideoSpigot Pro
- digital video capture and playback systems for the first 90 days of shipping.
-
- “We are extremely pleased to be able to pioneer and develop the digital video
- market together with a leader like Adobe,” said Michael McConnell, president of
- SuperMac. “It has been a long-standing tradition at SuperMac to create
- software that compliments our leading-edge hardware. By subsequently finding a
- strong partner to market and evangelize the software, we can focus on our
- hardware strengths and together fuel market growth."
-
- According to McConnell, SuperMac's focus on innovative hardware solutions for
- emerging digital video led the company to develop application software to
- demonstrate the capabilities of the new hardware. ReelTime was developed to
- showcase Apple's newly announced QuickTime™ media integration system software
- standard and SuperMac's family of digital video capture and playback systems.
- The sale of ReelTime allows SuperMac to concentrate on hardware development
- while allowing Adobe to market and co-develop the software.
-
- Adobe Systems, developer of the PostScript® page description language for
- electronic printing and publishing, plans to repeat the role it played in
- pioneering the desktop publishing market, this time with ReelTime.
-
- ReelTime allows Macintosh users to produce videos at their desktop for a wide
- variety of uses including interactive training, internal communications, and
- video publishing. ReelTime provides complete digital video and audio editing
- capabilities with a broad range of plug-in digital effects and transitions.
- Movies can be viewed on the Macintosh or exported in NTSC or PAL formats with
- appropriate video cards.
-
- “By itself, ReelTime is a breakthrough product,” said Steven Blank,
- vice-president of marketing for SuperMac. “Bundled with VideoSpigot, anyone
- can immediately begin producing videos on a desktop for under $1,000 — using
- tools previously available only to video professionals for more than $100,000.”
-
- Price and availability of ReelTime and VideoSpigot will be announced at a later
- date.
-
- SuperMac sells DiskFit and Network DiskFit to Dantz Development
-
- In a related move, SuperMac announced the sale of its DiskFit and Network
- DiskFit utility software products to the original developers of the products,
- Dantz Development Corporation, effective October 1, 1991. During the
- transition, SuperMac will continue to provide sales and technical support on
- the products.
-
- Thus SuperMac continues a process begun in July 1990 with its product
- SuperLaserSpool which was sold to Fifth Generation Systems.
-
- “Instead of spinning out the software line as a separate company, we have spun
- out the individual products,” McConnell said. “The goal has remained the same:
- to focus SuperMac's resources and energy on creating world-class, innovative
- hardware technology that accelerates and enhances Apple's system software,
- continuing to invest heavily in the areas of color QuickDraw solutions and
- digital video.”
-
- Remaining are PixelPaint and PixelPaint Professional 2.0 which the company said
- it will continue to actively market, sell, and support until a definitive
- agreement is reached with a new publisher.
-
- SuperMac designs products that accelerate or enhance the performance of Apple's
- system software standards. The company is a leading supplier of graphics
- peripherals to the Macintosh color desktop publishing, color prepress and
- digital video markets. SuperMac's products have received numerous editorial
- awards for quality and innovation, including the National Software Testing
- Laboratories designation as best large-screen Macintosh display system in April
- 1991. Its product lines include color graphics cards; 16", 19" and 21" color
- displays; image compression products; and digital video solutions.
-
- Additional information about SuperMac's digital video products and the name of
- the nearest SuperMac reseller is available from SuperMac Technology, 485
- Potrero Avenue, Sunnyvale, CA 94086. The company can be reached at (408)
- 773-4498.
